Today’s Thoughts
I woke up to a little
snow…about 2”. It melted by noon. Now it’s some sunshine with light snow.
I’m enjoying March
Madness as U of CO is doing OK in both women’s & men’s brackets. Times have
changed…back when I was there CU was only a football school.
I messaged Vlad, our
guide on the Trans-Siberian trip. I know he is in the music scene, so was
checking up on him after the Moscow incident. He is doing well and said to say
hi to all Focus members from that trip. I never ask about political things as I
don’t know who else sees his messages and he has never volunteered anything
political. He is still doing his music and gearing up for his summer camp for
children. Nice!
Terms with origins in rural America
Happy
as a clam
The
phrase is believed to have originally been "happy as a clam at high
tide," popular in the early 1800s in the Northeast. It refers to the fact
that clams are dug up in low tide but unreachable and safe from human harvest
at high tide.
Native Cultures New
There
Is More Than One Native American Culture
A
common misconception is that a single Native American culture spread throughout
the continent long before the Europeans arrived. The assumption was that
Christopher Columbus encountered one group of natives and that all the native
"Indians" were from the same group.
The
truth is that there were many different tribes with their own distinct beliefs,
languages, tribal identities, religions, and cultures. The U.S. government
currently recognizes over 570 different Alaska Native entities and American
Indian tribes throughout the country.
Historical Myths many believe…
Joan
of Arc Was Accurately Named and Illiterate
Renstore
reveals, “Neither was her name Joan nor did she come from Arc. Though she was
illiterate, she could sign her name. When she did, she signed it ‘Johanne’ or
‘Jehanne.’ It was the French feminine form of ‘John,’ which was translated to
‘Joan’ by her English captors.” Although initially illiterate, she eventually
learned to write (poorly) and even penned letters that exist today.
