Today’s Thoughts
Snow isn’t due until tomorrow but clouds are moving in
this afternoon. I watched several portions of the Grammys last night. Turned
it on to see Trevor Noah. Congrats to Taylor Swift for a record-setting Album
of the Year win. I’m not one of her fans, but this was historical, and she
was very nice in accepting her 4th Album of the Year award. Joni
Mitchell, at 80, did Both Sides Now and while she has 10 Grammys, this
was her first performance at the Grammys. It sure brought back memories from
my college days. Billy Joel also introduced a new song. That was nice too. I am amazed at the advancement in cancer treatments
during my life. When I was younger, a cancer diagnosis was usually terminal, and
treatments were horrific. Even with all the advancements, when a person says ‘I
have cancer’, people treat them differently. The news that King Charles III
has cancer has been headlines on the 24-hour news channels. It has not been
announced what kind of cancer, but the news stations are doing many updates during
the day. Just after my retirement I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer. I did
radiation with no harmful side effects. Then about 5 years ago I was
diagnosed with CLL, a blood cancer. I did chemo with NO harmful effects. Last
year my prostate count went back up. I take shots every three months and the
count is now within the normal range with no harmful effects. Every individual
is different, but for many more patients every year, a cancer diagnosis in
NOT terminal, not are the treatments horrific. |
Weird History…
Pope Gregory IX Believed That Cats
Were Evil The strange and often unbelievable
historical fact that Pope Gregory IX believed cats to be
evil is one of the most fascinating tales in history.
This belief was so strong that he even issued a papal bull in 1233, declaring
them as agents of Satan. The pope's reasoning for this decree came from his
own superstitions; cats were associated with witches, who were seen as
servants of the devil. Despite its strangeness, this belief has been
documented throughout the centuries and still remains an interesting part of
our past. |
Civil War Facts
The
Battle of Gettysburg In
late June 1862, Confederate forces, trying to gain positions in the North,
crossed the Potomac en route to the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. Gen.
Robert E. Lee, while awaiting an intelligence report, is informed by a covert
agent within Union forces that Maj. Gen. George Gordon Meade's forces are
gaining ground, spurring Lee to send his troops to Gettysburg. The
resulting three-day battle was a turning point for the North and the
bloodiest confrontation of the war. Estimated casualties were a combined
50,000 from both armies. The Union—with more soldiers and strategic
positions—won the fight but could not follow the defeated Confederates back
to Virginia. Lincoln later turned a portion of the Gettysburg battlefield
into a national cemetery, where he later delivered his memorable Gettysburg
Address. |
