Today’s Thoughts
Awaiting the incoming storm. The sky
clouded up and some very light snow. Now the sun is shining. I headed out about 9am to get some
groceries. It was very successful. I also ran into a teacher I hired at TCBS
back in the day. She and her husband have a 24-year-old Autistic son. They
are all doing well. She said she now has 25 years at TCBS and is ready to
retire. She is an excellent teacher who works well with students, staff, and
administration. Her mom has been helping with her son, but it is becoming too
much for her. She said her mom was ‘old school’ and has trouble dealing with
her grandson’s autism. He doesn’t respond well to her grandson’s difficulty
to follow her direction. When she told me she was retiring, she sounded just
like me…Education has changed and things she did her first years are now
coming back and she said I’ve already done that. Great encounter with the
family. I'm going to enjoy the Taylor Swift Super Bowl at home. |
Decoding Common
Phrases…N E W !
Bite the Bullet “Bite the bullet” is an idiom that means to endure a
painful or otherwise unpleasant situation that is seen as unavoidable. The
phrase is believed to have its origins in the battlefield, where injured
soldiers had to bite on a bullet during surgical procedures without
anesthesia to cope with the pain. In modern usage, it symbolizes the act of facing up
to a difficult or unpleasant task and enduring it with fortitude. This
expression is often used to convey the idea of bravely or stoically
confronting a challenging situation, rather than avoiding it. “Bite the
bullet” captures the essence of human resilience and the capacity to endure
hardship with courage and determination. |
Civil War Facts
Lincoln is reelected. The siege of Atlanta was a morale
boost for the Union—and President Lincoln's reelection campaign. Before
Sherman's victory in Atlanta, war weariness diminished Lincoln's chances of
winning at the polls. Radical Republicans considered the president too
clement with the rebel states when he vetoed the Wade-Davis bill, a law meant
to force the majority of voters in the Confederacy to swear loyalty to the
Union before the state could be restored. With Andrew Johnson as his
vice-presidential candidate, Lincoln won reelection by an ample margin, the
first to do so since Andrew Jackson in 1832. |
