Today’s Thoughts

First day of 2024 is cool and overcast. No precipitation is expected.

While in Mexico, I learned that Serbia is mostly Orthodox; they don’t celebrate Christmas until Jan. 7. Laura’s sister’s husband is Serbian born and raised. He’s been working in NYC for about 10 years.

I got a call last night that there would be a Hopi float in today’s Rose Bowl Parade. I saw it about 15 minutes into the parade. It had Hopi dancers and Hopi people honoring the Butterfly Dance. Very impressive. I also learned that tickets to the Bowl Game in 1965 was $6.50; today’s game tickets start at about $600.

I finally got all my Christmas items stored until next year. I also cleaned out my bedroom closet to make room for some new clothes I got at Christmas. I ended up donating some shirts and sweaters I haven’t worn in years to Savers.

 Enjoy

Important inventions…

1965: KEVLAR

Thanks to DuPont’s Stephanie Kwolek and Herbert Blades, who in 1965 invent a high-strength polymer called KEVLAR, the body armor of over 3,000 police officers has protected them from fatal attacks.

States with similar size to countries around the world.

Texas – Myanmar

At 268,596 square miles, Texas is the second-largest of the 50 U.S. states. In terms of foreign countries, this compares most closely to Myanmar, a nation in Southeast Asia with an area of 261,219 square miles. While Texas is also the second-most populous state — with just over 30 million residents — the total population of Myanmar is around 56 million individuals, ranking it among the world’s 30 most populous countries. Texas has three cities (Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas) with populations that exceed 1 million residents, though its capital city of Austin is home to 974,000 people. Myanmar’s capital city is Nay Pyi Taw, which is the third-most populous city in the country (925,000 residents) behind Yangon and Mandalay.

Historic Events

1959 – Luna 1, the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Moon and to orbit the Sun, was launched by the Soviet Union.

1974 – 55 MPH speed limit was imposed by the Richard Nixon administration.

2008 – Oil reached $100 per barrel for the first time.

Birthdays with some quotes

@89 – Barry Goldwater, American politician, businessman, and author (d. 1998)
@82 – Dan Rostenkowski, American politician (d. 2010)
84 – Jim Bakker, American televangelist
@78 – Martha Carey Thomas, American suffragette, and educator (d. 1935; heart disease)
77 – Jack Hanna, American zoologist, and author
The world is the true classroom. The most rewarding and important type of learning is through experience, seeing something with our own eyes.
@72 – Isaac Asimov, American Science Fiction writer (d. 1992; heart attack)
How often do people speak of art and science as though they were two entirely different things, with no interconnection…That is all wrong. The true artist is quite rational as well as imaginative and knows what he is doing; if he does not, his art suffers. The true scientist is quite imaginative as well as rational, and sometimes leaps to solutions where reason can follow only slowly; if he does not, his science suffers.
57 – Tia Carrere, American actress
Beauty lasts five minutes. Maybe longer if you have a good plastic surgeon.
@56 – Roger Miller, American singer-songwriter, musician, and actor (d. 1992; lung cancer)
56 – Cuba Gooding, Jr., American actor and producer
Don’t let people disrespect you. My mom says don’t open the door to the devil. Surround yourself with positive people.
55 – Christy Turlington, American model
52 – Taye Diggs, Movie actor
49 – Dax Shepard. American actor
47 – Brian Boucher, American ice hockey player, and sportscaster
Obviously (positive) results are what we’re looking for. To me, the process is what’s more important. I think if we take care of the process then the results will come.
40 – Kate Bosworth, American actress

…The End for today…
