Today’s Thoughts

Another cold night, but warming nicely. At noon it is a sweltering 47°.

Yesterday’s storm dropped about 3” on new powder. No complaints.

I stayed home yesterday, awaiting the cable guy between 11am-2pm. At 1:50 I got a call from Optimum. My channel guide issue had been discovered as ‘regional’ and while they were working on it, they had no idea when it would be fixed. They said I would get a call soon to cancel my appointment. I got the call and canceled. A real time example of the left hand not knowing what any other body was doing. This morning when I got up, the guide was working fine. It only cost me a couple of hours of my retirement.

Important inventions…

1976: Supercomputer

The Cray-1, the first commercially developed supercomputer, is installed in the Los Alamos National Laboratory. It’s the first supercomputer to successfully implement vector processors, a system that allows a single operation to quickly be performed on a large set of data, which is reflected in its speed of 160 MFLOPS—or 160 million floating-point operations per second. The Summit supercomputer, which went online at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2018, is capable of 143.5 petaflops.

States that never made the map

Forgottonia

This tongue-in-cheek attempt at secession may have escaped your radar, which would be fitting given the proposed state's name. Forgottonia was dreamt up in 1971 as a protest to raise awareness about 14 notoriously overlooked and neglected counties in western Illinois.

The brainchild of university student Neil Gamm, who was appointed first governor, Forgottonia never did achieve statehood. But the campaign achieved its aim of drawing attention to the region, which regained its Amtrak service as a result.

Untrue myths about Colonial America…States that never made the map

America's Wilderness Was Untouched Before The Europeans Arrived

Although many people like to believe that the forests of America were essentially untouched before the Europeans arrived, as it turns out, that's far from the truth. In reality, the Native Americans had been working the land for agriculture for centuries, and had made such an impact on the land that it changed the climate in the northeastern United States.

They also practiced controlled burns and cleared sections of the forest for crops. However, such beliefs that the Native Americans didn't know how to use their land encouraged settlers to take them from it.
