Thoughts for the day

Gotta love the monsoon. It’s cloudy and wet with lots of lightning and thunder.

I got a pedicure this morning, before the rain started. My feet and toes feel great now.

The administration released 33,000 pages (equal to 22 copies of War & Peace) of the Epstein files yesterday. The Dems believe this is about 1% of the files they have. Then it turns out most of the release was already in the public domain. It sure looks like Dems will keep digging while Republicans sit silent and hope voters will forget the whole Epstein sage.

Myths from Medieval Times

They Had Universities

If you think that most people in the Middle Ages were uneducated, you wouldn't be the only one. But the Medieval era had several universities, some of which still exist today. These include the University of Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, and the University of Bologna.

By 1300, 23 universities existed in Europe. Many of these schools did not have a founding date, instead of being built over time. Students studied liberal arts, language, law, and medicine. In some schools, such as Bologna, a guild of students hired professors to teach them whatever they wanted to know.

Mechanical Thermostats That Just Worked

The simple mercury switch thermostat kept homes comfortable for decades without requiring Wi-Fi, apps, or software updates. Modern smart thermostats offer impressive features, but they can be frustratingly complex to program and are prone to connectivity issues. Sometimes you just want to turn the dial and get warm.

Random Thoughts…

The sound of silence might just be the universe screaming so quietly that we can’t hear it. 🤫

When you close your eyes, your brain might be projecting a simulation of what it thinks darkness looks like. 🖤

What if dreams are actually memories from a past life?

Thoughts for the day

I headed out this morning for a much-needed haircut. My stylist noticed I had lost weight and that my hair looked better. I explained a little about my treatment. Glad she noticed.

It is devastating to see the damage of the earthquakes in Afghanistan. It is always hard to see the damage in a third-world country. The small villages have very little to begin with, and then everything they have is destroyed.

I try hard to keep up with the news, both National and International. When did the US decided that illegal immigrants should be deported to a 3rd world country where they have no connection?  Why is the US President suggesting that the Palestine refugees in Gaza should suffer the same deportation? Our nation of laws is in deep trouble.

Myths from Medieval Times

The Middle Ages Saw Many Medical Advances

Although people in the Middle Ages were not as medically advanced as we are today, they made many strides in the field. For instance, records from a 14th-century Dominican friar prove that Medieval people wore eyeglasses. We do not know who invented them, only that they were worn.

Historians also believe that interest in anatomy began in the Middle Ages. Doctors began dissecting during this time, and Italian physician Mondino de Luzzi even hosted public dissections to teach his students in 1315. These developments are what make us so knowledgeable about medicine today.

Paper Maps That Never Needed Updates

While GPS is incredibly convenient, there’s something to be said for good old-fashioned paper maps. They never lost signal, didn’t need charging, and gave you a better sense of your overall journey. Plus, learning to read a map was a valuable skill that helped develop spatial awareness and planning abilities.

Random Thoughts…

If ghosts exist, they might be watching us in the shower, and we’ll never know.

Every mirror in your house has seen you at your worst and will never forget.

What if the shadows we see are alternate versions of ourselves trying to escape?

Your reflection in the mirror could be slightly delayed, and you’d never notice.

Thoughts for the day

A very nice Labor Day. Back in the day, many things couldn’t be done on the weekend, so I had to use a Federal Holiday to do that business. Now that I’m retired, I almost never do any shopping on a Federal Holiday. I just enjoy the day and hope that those working are getting time and half or double time for giving up their Federal Holiday. When I was working at the grocery store I got double time for a Federal Holiday and time and half for Sundays. Thank you unions.

Yesterday I listened to an interview with Sec. of Education Linda McMahon on MSNBC. While her plan sounds fairly reasonable, the important thing to watch is the actions of her department. So far, I’m not very happy with her department’s actions.

I got a text from Faith this morning about 11am letting me know they had arrived back in Flagstaff. They had taken some of their grandson’s ‘stuff’ to him in college and they also took his gir friend so she could be ready for classes there. Then Andy and Faith visited her relatives for a few days. Nice trip.

Myths from Medieval Times

Knight's Armor Was Light And Easy To Wear

All that steel-plated armor and chain mail looks heavy, doesn't it? In reality, it was actually quite light. Knight armor weighed between 10 and 15 pounds, which is actually less than modern soldiers carry. American soldiers have to haul 60 pounds of gear at least.

That said, certain types of armor were heavier than others. In 2011, a study found that 15th-century French armor required knights to use twice as much energy as the English did. Contrary to common belief, the sword was the lightest part, only around 2.5 to 3.5 pounds.

Things That Worked Better Before They Were “Improved” by Technology

Vending Machines That Accepted Wrinkled Bills

The old mechanical bill acceptors weren’t picky about slightly wrinkled dollars. Today’s machines with their sophisticated sensors often reject perfectly good bills multiple times, leaving you frustrated and still hungry. Sometimes the simple mechanical solution really was the better one.

Random Thoughts…

As a kid my parents taught me to not believe everything I see on TV, now I have to teach them to not believe everything they see on Facebook.

The Olympics should have a 'For Fun' section at the end of all the games so all the athletes can try different sports.

Tall people are expected to use their reach to help shorter people, but if a tall person were to ask a short person to hand them something they dropped on the floor it'd be insulting.

What if Earth is like one of those uncontacted tribes in South America, like the whole Galaxy knows we're here but they've agreed not to contact us until we figure it out for ourselves.
