World Historical Highlights for Today
1899 The Irish Literary Theatre in Dublin opens. The first production of the Irish Literary Theatre, The Countess Cathleen is performed. Like many of Yeats' plays, it is inspired by Irish folklore. In a time of famine, demons sent by Satan come to Ireland to buy the souls of the starving people. The saintly Cathleen disposes of her vast estates and wealth in order to feed the peasants, yet the demons thwart her at every turn; at last, she sacrifices her own soul to save those of the poor
1919 Edward George Honey first proposes the idea of a moment of silence to commemorate The Armistice of World War I, which later results in the creation of Remembrance Day.

My Rambling Thoughts
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Moms out there. Always a tough day for those who have lost their Moms.
Enjoyable, quiet day. Rain/snow last night, chilly today.
Finished my reading on Cuba. Learned so new things and look forward to the discussion group tonight. Both the government and the people have a lot of difficult decisions to make regarding their position in the world. As I have said before, they don’t want to be like the US…friends yes, just independent to make their own decisions. A long road ahead for them.

Brain Teasers
(answers at the end of post)
What Fruits?
Language brain teasers are those that involve the English language. You need to think about and manipulate words and letters.
A different fruit (a total of twelve) is buried in every one of the following lines.

Example: A word is considered 'buried' when it can be read like P A R I S in the sentence "Grand-pa(pa ris)es at seven every morning."
Can you detect them?

Ah! If I get my good ship home
I'll find a tempting spot,
Where mayhap pleasant flowers will bloom,
And there I'll shape a charming cot.

Where bees sip nectar in each flower,
And Philomel on hawthorn rests,
I'll shape a rustic, sun-kissed bower -
A bower meet for angel guests.

Then she who lives and loves with me,
Sing our days of calm repose,
Sole monarch of the flowers will be -
For Myra is indeed a rose.

2 jokes for the day
A man was standing in front of the bathroom mirror one evening admiring his reflection, when he posed the following question to his wife of 20 years, “Will you still love me when I’m old, fat, and balding?”

She answered, “Of course I will. I've already been doing it for the past 5 years haven't I?”

Our pastor, an avid golfer, was once taking part in a local tournament. As he was preparing to tee off, the organizer of the tournament approached him and pointed to the dark, threatening storm clouds, which were gathering around.

"Preacher," the organizer said, "I trust you'll see to it that the weather won't turn bad on us?"

Our pastor shook his head. "Sorry," he replied. "I'm sales, not management!"

Yep, It Really Happened
*-- Come, Mister Tally Man, Tally Me banana --*
Chinese live-streaming video websites announced female broadcasters are being banned from "seductively eating bananas" as part of a crackdown on pornography. Regulations handed down as part of a Ministry of Culture investigation into "inappropriate and erotic" online content requires popular streaming sites to monitor all of the live streams they host for banned content including pornography and violence. The content the sites are seeking to block from broadcasts include female live-steamers "seductively eating bananas." Female live-streamers are also being banned from wearing stockings and suspenders while appearing on camera. Social media users in China have questioned at what point footage of a woman eating a banana becomes provocative, while others wondered whether the same rules would be applied to men who eat bananas while live-streaming.

Somewhat Useless Information
Mother's Day is not just another "Hallmark Holiday". As far back as 250 B.C. ancient Romans celebrated a spring festival called, Hilaria. This was dedicated to a mother goddess named, Cybele, on the Ides of March. Her followers would make offerings at the temple, hold parades, play games and also have masquerades. It lasted three days.
***
In the 1600's England, Mothering Sunday took place on the 4th Sunday of Lent. It began with a prayer service in honor of the Virgin Mary. Afterwards children would present their moms with flowers.
***
In 1870 a female activist, writer and poet by the name of Julia Ward (she wrote the "Battle Hymn of the Republic") suggested a day of peace and strongly advocated other women to stand up against the war. From this plea she was able to get Boston to recognize mothers on the second Sunday of June.
***
Anna Jarvis was also a woman that may have been behind our traditional Mother's Day celebration on the second Sunday of May. Anna never had any children, but wanted to carry out her own mother's wishes of having a day just for moms. Anna tirelessly campaigned and on May 8th, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
***
Approximately $14 billion dollars is spent on Mother's Day. Common gifts include: cards, flowers, meals in restaurants, jewelry, gift cards, clothing, and spa trips.
***
In what was formerly Yugoslavia, children would tie up their mother on Mother's Day. The only way she could get free would be to pay her children with treats.

Disclaimer: All opinions are mine…feel free to agree or disagree.
All ‘data’ info is from the internet sites and is usually checked with at least one other source, but I have learned that every site contains mistakes and sadly once the information is out there, many sites simply copy it and is therefore difficult to verify. Also for events occurring before the Gregorian calendar was adopted [1582] the dates may not be totally accurate.
