My Thoughts for the day

It is sure getting cold at night. At 6:30 it was 19°. It has warmed up to a sweltering 36 .

This morning, I braved the cold to get my monthly blood draw to see if I need a phlebotomy on Monday and to see how the meds are working. The cold weather caused my veins to shrink but the professional guy did draw the blood with little problems. He said it was a little dicey.

I applaud all that keep up with the news. Everyday it is just more stuff that affects our country, but one must dig back to figure out how any new news relates to the news of a few days ago. I’m getting bored trying to follow the news. Oh, well.

I’m planning on having a quiet weekend, mostly at home. No reason for me to be out and about in all this cold weather. Haha.

Wild West Myths that never happened…

Cowboys Were Constantly in Gunfights

Hollywood made it seem like every cowboy carried a revolver and was always ready for a shootout in the streets. In reality, gunfights were extremely rare. Most towns had strict gun control laws, requiring visitors to check their weapons with the sheriff upon arrival, as debunked by Stories of the Wild West on Medium.

Cowboys were more often ranch hands than fighters, spending long days herding cattle, repairing fences, and enduring harsh weather. Their lives were grueling, repetitive, and far from glamorous. The idea of the “gunslinger cowboy” was largely a creation of pulp fiction and later reinforced by Western films.

When violence occurred, it usually stemmed from drunken brawls, disputes over gambling, or clashes between rival groups. The famous shootout at the O.K. Corral was an exception, not the rule, and even that lasted less than a minute. Such events stood out precisely because they were so unusual.

Cities that changed their names…

Bombay → Mumbai (India

When the Indian government officially changed “Bombay” to “Mumbai” in 1995, it wasn’t just linguistic housekeeping; it was a homecoming. The name “Bombay” had colonial roots, borrowed from the Portuguese Bom Bahia, or “good bay.” But to the people of Maharashtra, “Mumbai” (from the local goddess Mumbā Devī) had always been the real name. Reclaiming it was about more than words; it was about pride, language, and belonging.
The city didn’t slow down for the change; its trains still thundered, its lights still burned through the night, but it finally spoke in its own tongue.

Random Thoughts…

Finally is pronounced “final-e” and finale is pronounced “fi-nally.”

Why do we call it a building if it’s already built?

If we could hear our pets thoughts, would we be amazed or disappointed?

Why do we say ‘sleeping like a baby’ when babies often wake up crying and restless?
