Hobo

Meaning a vagrant or a wanderer, the word "hobo" is traced to common usage at the end of the 19th century in the U.S. West. One origin may be the word hawbuck, meaning country bumpkin, and another is workers' call to one another of "ho boy" when building the railroads.

Maria Tallchief Made History As a Ballerina

Not very many textbooks in grade school classrooms highlight the accolades and accomplishments of Maria Tallchief. Maria made history as a prominent figure within the ballet community - especially after becoming the first Native American female to receive international acclaim.

In addition to achieving the designation of prima ballerina, she was the lead performer in quite a few different ballets. Even after she retired, she did not completely leave the ballet world behind. Tallchief helped to establish the Chicago City Ballet and served for years as the artistic director.

The Discovery of Fire Was a Single, Accidental Event

Archeological evidence suggests that various populations of prehistoric humans probably discovered how to start and control fire gradually through various methods. Methods could have involved harvesting fire from natural sources like lightning strikes, wildfires, or even volcanic eruptions! It’s unlikely that a random, lucky spark prompted an instantaneous campfire.

Taiwan earthquake yesterday was the largest earthquake in 25 years. Years ago, I took a trip with Focus to that island. I remember great people, very good food, and the beauty of the country. I also remember our young guide was in Toastmasters and used what he had learned very well. I hope the survivors are able to heal quickly.

I know that war anywhere is horrific. In this horrific mess in Gaza, 190+ aide workers have been killed. The latest 8 to die worked for the World Central Kitchen who were feeding citizens during the near famine there. Israel’s IDF says it was a mistake. It needs to be investigated internationally and punish those responsible. The killing of aide workers is not acceptable.

Another ongoing debate related to Native Americans in the United States is the correlation between the Great Law of Peace (also referred to as the "Iroquois Constitution") and the United States Constitution. Some argue that the writers of the U.S. Constitution were already familiar with the Great Law of Peace, which is why they believe that the similarities were intentional.

The truth is that the U.S. Constitution is an intricately-detailed document with a plethora of different influences - not just the Iroquois Constitution. These influences include thinkers from the Enlightenment era, European politics as well as English common law.
