Thoughts for the day
Happy Camper here. I had my much-awaited Colonoscopy this morning. It
took almost 7 months to get the appointment and the procedure lasted less than
an hour. The doctor says nothing to worry about, and the biopsy results will be
next week. This was my first colonoscopy, and I certainly did not know what to
expect. I’m glad it is finally completed and know that any future ones will be
nothing to be concerned about.
While I was having the procedure, the HOA grounds crew was busy cleaning
up our area. Nice!
I am concerned about the Federal National Guard arriving in cities. I
remember when they were brought into the South to integrated schools. That is
not what is happening today. I have seen National Guard at work when there is a
disaster. That is not what is happening today. The current situation in a few
cities does not seem to need the National Guard. It seems to me this is the
administration’s response to draw attention away from the Administration to
grab headlines away from their own problems.

Destinations That Were Once No-Go Zones
Sperrgebiet, Namibia
Sperrgebiet is a diamond-rich area in the
southern Namib desert in southwestern Namibia. It was closed to the public
after a railway worker called Zacharias Lewala found a diamond at Kolmanskop in
1908. Sperrgebiet means 'prohibited area' in German and the whole area was
shut off from the outside world until the early 21st century. It was a
secretive place of rich diamond mines, treacherous sand seas, and mysterious
folk tales.
In 2004 the Sperrgebiet region was declared an 8,500-square-mile national
park. Known as Tsau Khaeb, the park was tentatively part-opened to visitors who
discovered abandoned mines, eerie ghost towns swallowed by sand, and the
skeletons of ships wrecked along the jagged coastline. The park was quickly
recognized as a top biodiversity hotspot, and its swirling sea fog
supports more endemic species of succulent than can be found anywhere
else on Earth. It is home to Namibia’s first Marine Protected Area too, where
whales, dolphins, fur seals, and vast seabird colonies abound.

Turning Major Anniversaries in 2025
1900 Galveston Hurricane, 125 Years
On September 8, 1900, a hurricane struck
Galveston, Texas, killing at least 6,000 people, with some estimates above
8,000. The city built a 17-foot seawall after 1902 and raised thousands of
buildings by pumping in sand. Markers along Seawall Boulevard explain
elevations and storm surge. The anniversary is a reminder to read beach flag
warnings and heed evacuation orders. Heat and glare on the Gulf can be intense
in September, so pack water and wear hats when walking the waterfront.
