Thoughts for the day

Labor Day weekend has had great weather.  I am reminded that this holiday is possible due to the work of Unions. They bring us good wages, good work hours, overtime pay, and a host of other accomplishments.

I spent some time this morning getting caught up with my mail. It was successful.

I watched part of the Alabama/Florida State football game. It was a good game with the Florida State upset. At the final buzzer the Florida State crowd emptied the bleachers onto the field. I looked unusual but the broadcasters said nothing. Today I read that Florida State could be fined $50,000 for that, as their league has a new rule about nonplayers on the field. A second violation would be $100,000 and a third would be $200,000. I keep an eye out to see what happens.

I do not believe we should have convicted felons who are illegal immigrants in our country. It seems to me that ICE is going too far with their arrests. Last week they went to the state of Washington and arrested 2 firefighters who were actively fighting a huge fire. They checked all the active firefighters at the fire for citizenship papers. To me this is a bridge too far.

Myths from Medieval Times

Democracy Existed

During the Middle Ages, many countries--including France, England, Spain, and Germany--had monarchies. However, some democratic institutions formed before the Medieval Era. In 930, the first assembly of the Alþingi convened in Iceland, which is regarded as the world's first parliamentary system.

In the 13th century, parliaments formed in England and France. The first one was created in 1215 with the Magna Carta. These groups were summoned by the king, and they were mostly men. However, they made major strides toward democracy and representation in these Medieval civilizations.

TV Sets You Could Actually Fix

When your old tube TV acted up, you could often fix it by replacing a vacuum tube or adjusting the antenna. Today’s flat-screen TVs offer amazing picture quality, but when they break, they’re usually destined for the recycling center. The repair costs often exceed the price of a new set, creating unnecessary waste and expense.

Random Thoughts…

Theme parks can snap a crystal clear picture of you on a roller coaster at 70 mph, but bank cameras can't get a clear shot of a robber standing still.

If my calculator had a history, it would be more embarrassing than my browser history.

Lawyers hope you get sued, doctors hope you get sick, cops hope you're criminal, mechanics hope you have car trouble, but only a thief wishes prosperity for you.

Thoughts for the day

Labor Day weekend has started off well. It looks like there will be more monsoon today.

The Coconino County Fair is in full spring at Fort Tuthill on the west side of town. I may take some time over this long weekend to visit.

One of my next-door neighbors, all college students, removed a carpet that had been covering the back deck area of their SUV. Then they folded it and left it under their front window. I never run into these neighbors. The other day the HOA monitor was out looking and taking notes on violations. I asked about the carpet. She said I’ll try again…I reported this last month. Well, this morning as I was heading out, I noticed the carpet was gone. Nice!

I remember a time when President was seldom seen on TV, and when he did appear, it was most likely very newsworthy. It worked for my entie life and I am more than ready to go back to those days. I am so exhausted seeing Trump every day with his nonsense.

I also remember a time when the government just worked, every day, without daily bombardments from the various cabinet secretaries. When I was in 6th grade my teacher had us memorize and follow the various cabinets in JFK’s Cabinet. To this day I still learn the names of each cabinet secretary when they take office. I’m getting tired of the many hearings and cabinet meetings that do little to improve the lives of everyday Americans.

I worked for the Feds for over 30 years, and the vast majority of those I knew in the government workforce were hard working, dedicated employees who just wanted to do a good job.

Myths from Medieval Times

Plague Doctors Did Not Exist During The Black Death

Plague doctors, the physicians who wore iconic bird-like masks, are often associated with the Middle Ages. Many people believe that they were everywhere when the Black Death began in 1346. But according to historians, the first plague doctors appeared during the 1600s.

Even then, few plague doctors emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries. Most lived in Italy, mainly Rome and Milan, although some were recorded in southern France. Of course, physicians existed during the Black Plague, but none of them are recorded as wearing masks even remotely similar to plague doctor masks.

Appliances That Lasted Decades

Those harvest gold refrigerators and avocado green washers from the 1970s might not have been pretty, but they were built to last. Modern appliances with their fancy digital displays and Wi-Fi connectivity often break down after just a few years. The older models had fewer features but were built with quality materials and simple, reliable mechanisms that kept running for decades.

Randomly hearing your favorite song on the radio is more satisfying than playing it directly from your ipod.

Maybe plants are really farming us, giving us oxygen until we eventually expire and turn into mulch which they can consume

Thoughts for the day

I think I have finally figured out how to start posting my blog again. I’m not clear on what I finally did but today I suddenly had my blog back on my computer.

The monsoon has returned this week. There have been good rain showers most days. It look like there will still be rain today.

This rain has been nice. I’ve been watering for Faith and Andy while they went to Indiana. I only had to water one day this whole week.

My gutters filled with pine needles. I messaged the landlord at least 5 times but no one cleaned the gutter. Two days ago, after a big storm I took some pictures of the water in the gutter, and running over to the painted eaves under the gutter. Finally someone came and cleaned them. I messaged him when it was done. He apologized for it taking so long and thanked me for being very persistent in getting them cleaned.

Myths from Medieval Times

People Weren't All Tiny

While it's true that people were generally smaller in the past than they are today, the difference between an average person in medieval times and an average person in the 21st century aren't particularly dramatic.

Average heights were around 5'6" for men and 5'2" for women — only a couple of inches off from modern-day averages. The myth of people being dramatically smaller during medieval times arose partly from misunderstandings of historical armor sizes.

Things That Worked Better Before They Were “Improved” by Technology

Windows That Open Without Electronics

The simple hand-crank window in cars never failed you. No electric motors to burn out, no switches to malfunction – just reliable mechanical operation that worked every time. While power windows are convenient, there’s something satisfying about that manual control, and you never had to worry about being trapped if your car’s electrical system failed.
